Snehana (Oil Therapy)
Swedana is another vital preparatory therapy in Ayurveda, often performed after Snehana and before Panchakarma. The term Swedana comes from the Sanskrit word “Sweda” meaning to sweat. This therapy uses herbal steam to induce sweating, open up the channels of the body (srotas), and guide toxins toward the gastrointestinal tract for easier elimination.
By applying warmth and herbal vapors, Swedana not only helps in detoxification but also improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and relieves heaviness from the body. It is an excellent way to prepare the body for deeper cleansing treatments.
Types of Snehana
-
External Snehana (Abhyanga)
A gentle, rhythmic oil massage performed using warm herbal oils. It nourishes the skin, strengthens joints, improves circulation, relaxes muscles, and induces deep relaxation. -
Internal Snehana (Snehapana)
Involves the controlled intake of medicated ghee or oils. This penetrates the deeper tissues, loosens toxins (Ama), and directs them toward the digestive tract for elimination.
