Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy)

Swedana is another vital preparatory therapy in Ayurveda, often performed after Snehana and before Panchakarma. The term Swedana comes from the Sanskrit word “Sweda” meaning to sweat. This therapy uses herbal steam to induce sweating, open up the channels of the body (srotas), and guide toxins toward the gastrointestinal tract for easier elimination.
By applying warmth and herbal vapors, Swedana not only helps in detoxification but also improves circulation, reduces stiffness, and relieves heaviness from the body. It is an excellent way to prepare the body for deeper cleansing treatments.
Types of Swedana
-
Steam Bath (Bashpa Swedana)
A full-body herbal steam treatment where the patient is exposed to medicated steam inside a wooden or herbal steam chamber. This helps loosen toxins, relax muscles, and improve overall circulation. -
Nadi Swedana
A localized steam therapy where herbal steam is directed to specific parts of the body using a tube or nozzle. This is especially useful for joint pain, stiffness, or localized swelling.
